Gait scan analysis

Gait scan analysis

Gait Scan analysis is a computerised method of analysing the human gait pattern (how you walk and what your feet do whilst you’re walking).

A vast proportion of the population are afflicted by dropped arches or flat feet. This change in the normal biomechanics of the foot impacts greatly on the body’s ability to absorb shock and provide normal proprioceptive input from the muscles and joints that control the ankles and feet. Proprioception is the constant feedback loop which happens subconsciously in the space of milliseconds. A tennis player sliding for a return ball will exert great force through the ankle whilst this feedback loop tells the spinal cord (and to some degree the brain) how much muscle tone is required in relation to the position of the joint. A change in the architecture of the foot inhibits this feedback process and leads to injury when the area is physically challenged.

Gait scan analysis involves walking across a force plate on the ground, which is peripheral to a laptop. The software program can capture, from the 4000 sensors in the force plate, what happens in the foot during the gait cycle. This then forms the basis for a ‘prescription’ orthotic (shoe insole) to correct the foot mechanics.

Orthotics come in several designs and styles ranging from those suitable for sports shoes to ladies court shoes. A full range of the products available can be seen at www.theorthoticgroup.com .
